Simon and Katy head to Malta and Gozo – Part 2 https://wpupgrade.diversetravel.co.uk/simon-and-katy-head-to-malta-and-gozo-part-2/ Wed, 14 Apr 2021 11:57:08 +0000 https://www.diversetravel.co.uk/?p=24189

Simon and Katy head on to Malta for the second part of their trip to the Maltese Islands.

After just two days on Gozo, Katy and I were back to Malta! We were met outside the ferry port and driven to our hotel, Dolmen Hotel, located in St Paul’s Bay. The scenic 30-minute drive took us through some beautiful towns and villages, filled with quaint, medieval-looking buildings, with wonderful distant views of villages and fortified towns melting into the sunset.

On arriving in St Paul’s Bay, everything looked bigger, more modern and busier than we had experienced on Gozo. Arriving outside Dolmen Hotel, we were greeted with a sweeping drive to reception, tall glass windows and numerous balconies. Quite the opposite of the small, quaint St Patrick’s Hotel on Gozo.

Malta and Gozo Diving Holidays

The Dolmen Hotel

The Dolmen looked a little like a conference centre at first glance but as you explore the grounds, you find it offers lovely spacious gardens and a couple of attractive swimming pools, including an infinity pool. Hand sanitiser gel was available throughout the reception and outside restaurants. Every member of the hotel team wore face masks. The reception and restaurant desks had Perspex screens fitted.

Plenty of well spaced out sun loungers surrounded the busy pool areas. Guests were not expected to wear face masks in the  outside areas, but are encouraged to do so in all covered areas.

Breakfast the following morning was very easy and relaxed. With COVID-19, everything a guest might want for breakfast is handed to them by one of the restaurant staff, all either wearing face masks or a visor. Whether it is a cup of coffee, a glass of fruit juice, a bowl of cereal or a continental breakfast, you lined up and the staff would hand the items to you. The restaurant wasn’t too busy at 8am, so it was easy for the early morning divers to find a clean table.  On our last day we arrived at 9am and breakfast room was heaving with guests!

Let’s go Diving – Together!

Maltaqua picked us up at 8.30am for the short 15-minute drive to their dive centre. On arrival, we met with the founder and owner Agnes, her daughter Simone and Anna. Registration paperwork completed, we were sized up for our rental equipment by the Maltaqua dive team. Customers renting gear are given a light dive kit bag to store everything in. All rental gear is disinfected after the day’s diving and you will normally get the same wetsuit, BCD and fins back the next day.  They prefer not to rent boots for hygiene purposes (they don’t fully dry overnight), so they recommend you bring your own to use.

All ready for our first dive!

We drove 30 minutes to a dive site at the south of the island called Ghar Lapsi. It was such a hot day and the ground was scorching! I remember this vividly as I didn’t have dive boots, so I was dancing around to find shaded areas.

Katy was super excited as this would be her very first dive as a qualified PADI Open Water diver and not forgetting, with her super boyfriend as her dive buddy 😉

What’s the diving like?

With full dive gear on, we walked down a very steep road to the entry point. Imagine an enormous rock pool, with a gap on the left side to swim out to sea. The rocky steps down into the water were a little slippery without boots.  Our dive began with a swim through the ‘rockpool’ area – a favourite place for local families taking a dip and snorkelling.  Once we swam out and started our dive, we had endless space to float around in. Both dives were relaxing with great visibility. The first thing we spotted was an octopus which was wonderfully camouflaged amongst sea grass in a small nook.  Several colourful sea worms meandered through the clear water and Katie experienced her first lovely swim-through.  All around, the beautiful lunar-like underwater landscape continued to amaze us.

We were back at the dive centre by 4pm. With all our equipment  stored away safely, we were taken back to our hotel.

Day two – well-known Cirkewwa and the Rozi

An even earlier breakfast this morning! Picked up at 8.15am we returned to the Maltaqua dive centre. Our dive gear and tanks loaded onto the van, we headed out to our dive site for the day, Cirkewwa, at the northeast tip of Malta.

Cirkewwa is one of the most popular dive sites on Malta and is right next door to the Malta to Gozo ferry port. The drive there took around 30 minutes, and the dive centres have their own car park right beside the entry point. Surprisingly, we weren’t the first vehicle to arrive.  By the time we had our dive gear on, the car park was completely full of divers as far as you could see. We were pleased to hear from our dive guide that even if it looks busy on land, once you get into the water, you probably won’t see anyone else.  The dive site is so vast!

Important stuff – snacks and bubbles!

A resident food van on site serves hot /cold food and drinks. The queue was quite long at times, so you might prefer to take your own sandwich or snacks and just relax in the sunshine. A little tip – there wasn’t much shade available and it was a scorching hot day. I sat inside the van at one point with all the doors open but it would be wise to take an umbrella!

Over two dives, we saw lots of schooling fish and the occasional parrotfish feeding. Swim-throughs and huge boulders and rocks that formed the drop-off were an amazing sight. We also swam over a wreck called the Rozi for a spectacular birds-eye view in great visibility. The Rozi was a former tugboat, scuttled in 1992 as an underwater tourist attraction for submarine tours which has now become a popular artificial reef for scuba divers.

Our diving was over all too soon. Heading back to the dive centre, we handed our kit back, settled our bill, and were then taken back to our hotel.

Malta Diving Holidays

Time to hit the sights, topside!

It was our final evening and so we planned a visit to the medieval city of Mdina.  Dinner that evening was to be at a restaurant a friend had recommended called Fontanella. After a quick freshen up, we headed to the the bus station, just 5 minutes’ walk from our hotel. Our picturesque bus journey to Mdina took around one hour and it was most definitely worth it!

Mdina sits atop a hill, surrounded by huge stone walls and protected by a deep moat. The city oversees many of the neighbouring towns and as we arrived the sun was slowly setting. Walking through the warm, narrow streets of the city was extremely atmospheric.  The views across the valley were simply breathtaking. Our table for two at Fontanella couldn’t have been more perfect, set in between the ramparts along the very edge of the city walls. We opted for the Mediterranean platter and it tasted wonderful!

Wandering back through the narrow streets, with the sunset and the moon in the sky, we felt very lucky to be able to spend time in such a truly stunning place.

Our last day!

The following day was our last day on Malta and the last day of our amazing trip. Our flight home didn’t leave until 11pm, so we booked a late check out of our room and headed for the bus station again. This time we headed towards the tiny capital city of Valletta. Friends had recommended we visit and, once again, we were so glad we did! The bus journey there took around 1.5 hours; we later found out we had caught the wrong bus!

Exploring Valletta

We spent the afternoon walking around the city sightseeing. It was another hot day, but the tall, old buildings provided some lovely shade. We made our way up to the upper Barrakka Gardens that overlook the huge, picturesque harbour. The gardens were beautiful and the viewpoints incredible. We spent ages just watching people and boats come and go!

For lunch, there were so many restaurants to choose from. Some had their own closed area with tables and others had their tables and huge umbrellas set out along the centre of pedestrianised streets. We chose one and ate a lovely lunch, talking about the wonderful places we had visited, the friendly locals we had met, and about our new diving experiences over the past few days. We had both had a truly brilliant few days on Gozo and Malta and wished we could have stayed longer!

Rather than endure a long bus journey back to Dolmen Hotel, we decided to book a Bolt car. Bolt – similar to Uber – is very popular on Malta. We downloaded the Bolt app and it was very easy to book a car and after walking to a meeting point, it arrived very quickly. The journey back took just 30 minutes and didn’t cost much more than two bus tickets.

Malta and Gozo Diving Holidays

Time to return home

Back at Dolmen Hotel, we collected our luggage and waited outside for our transfer back to Malta airport. We arrived back at the airport in great time and when we got inside, made our way to the Ryanair check-in desk. We didn’t have to wait too long for check in to open and once we had handed over our hold bag, we made our way to security. Departures had several places to eat and drink and a decent duty free shop. At 10pm it was still busy with passengers but there was plenty of room for everyone to move around and sit down if they wanted to. The departure gate for our flight was quickly open, so we had a short walk to our gate, and we were back on the plane in no time at all.

Trip Summary

Gozo and Malta had both been wonderfully relaxing, with a refreshing Mediterranean Sea and superb hot weather.  Clear blue dive sites filled with lovely wrecks and stunning underwater topography delighted on every dive..

Learning to dive in Malta & Gozo

Katy had great fun learning to dive on Gozo and was elated when she qualified as a PADI Open Water Diver!  Her first dive on Malta as a qualified diver was a memorable one; with a picturesque ‘rock pool’ entry point and diving with her first buddy (me!).  As a seasoned diver, it is always a treat to experience diving through the eyes of a newbie.  Nothing beats those first glimpses of some truly amazing topography underwater, plentiful fish and an octopus or two – not to mention experiencing that weightless, gliding feeling that we, as divers, can’t get enough of! Gozo and Malta are definitely perfect locations to go if you want to learn to dive, with warm seas and calm diving conditions.

For the seasoned diver…

It was really great to be diving again after so many months and I am always happy when diving in warm water.  The fish life wasn’t particularly colourful on the sites we dived and there were no big animals to see, but we knew this before we travelled anyway. The underwater topography, however, was hugely impressive – almost a lunar landscape in places.  Caves, overhangs and swim-throughs were delightful to experience in such great visibility.

I only had chance to dive on a couple of wrecks whilst in Malta and Gozo. There are so many more wonderful wrecks to dive, mostly at much deeper depths, so the destination is an absolute must for those who crave their metal.  An easy to get to destination for wreck lovers!

Which to choose .. Malta or Gozo?

In summary, divers who are looking for quaint and quiet will really enjoy Gozo. Missed our blog on Gozo?  Click here to read all about it.

If you like a little more luxury from your hotel with more facilities, busier dive sites and evenings, Malta is more for you.

Or why not combine the best of both worlds and experience both islands in a single holiday? A regular ferry schedule, and great transportation make it really easy!

The local people we met along the way at dive centres, hotels, restaurants and shops were all welcoming and friendly. The towns and cities were picturesque.  All with stunning ancient buildings steeped in history, making them an absolute joy to explore.

Finally, with just a 3-hour flight from the UK, Malta and Gozo are an absolute treat for a quick getaway. The warm Mediterranean Sea, easy-access shore diving, caves, swim-throughs, attractive fish life and many great wrecks to dive, Gozo and Malta must surely feature on all divers wish-lists. It’s certainly back on mine!

Simon and Katy head to Malta and Gozo – Part 1 https://wpupgrade.diversetravel.co.uk/simon-and-katy-head-to-malta-and-gozo-part-1/ Mon, 12 Apr 2021 12:00:42 +0000 https://www.diversetravel.co.uk/?p=22718

Simon and Katy head to Malta and Gozo to see for themselves why the Maltese Islands are so incredibly popular with Diverse Travel guests.

The day had finally arrived! After countless lockdown weeks juggling work, home-schooling and not keeping very fit, it was at last time to fly away and get wet diving! I have been selling holidays to Malta and Gozo for 18 years now but, in all this time, I have never managed to see the sights below and above the water for myself.

Feedback from customers has always been glowing and very positive, so I was really excited to finally get the opportunity to visit. My partner Katy would be joining me too and couldn’t wait to start her PADI Open Water referral course with St Andrew’s Divers Cove on Gozo. Time to catch that plane!

Malta and Gozo Diving Holidays

Travelling to Gozo

Parking at Stansted Airport, we were soon on the long-stay bus heading to the terminal. We weren’t worried about travelling through the airports or sitting on a plane wearing our face masks. Not much seemed very different, apart from some new Covid-19 signage, bottles of hand sanitiser placed at various points… oh and everyone was wearing a face mask! Quite a surreal scene at first glance.

At the Airport

The Ryanair check in queue appeared to be quite long but this was mostly due to everyone adhering to the new social distancing rules. It didn’t take long to drop off our hold baggage and, with the boarding paperwork in hand, we headed through security. Again, the queues appeared long, but it was well-managed, and we were quickly airside.

With not much time to wait before our departure gate was open we took the monorail.  All travellers wore face masks and social distancing was mostly in place throughout the airport. The queue on the air bridge and entering the plane was a little cosy at times, but with everyone donning face masks, we felt safe.

Once sat in our seats, the doors closed, and normal service resumed onboard. Our plane was full and once airborne the cabin crew walked back and forth with their trollies, wearing face masks and selling drinks and snacks. We were relieved to see that the toilets were open as normal!

Malta and Gozo Diving Holidays

Arriving in Malta and onward to Gozo

Landing in Malta everyone stood up, eager to get their bags and get to their destination. Social distancing was not possible on the plane but at least we were all wearing face masks!

Inside the airport,  all of the local staff  were wearing masks or were behind screens. The airport seemed calm and ordered. Meeting our driver outside the airport, we began our 30 minute drive to the Gozo ferry terminal. He was wearing a face mask and we kept ours on, as is the policy during transportation.

Getting to Gozo

On arrival at the terminal, we were rushed through the ticket gate to catch the next ferry. As we stepped on, the doors closed behind us – phew! But we needn’t have worried. Ferries run from Gozo to Malta (and back) every hour, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year! Our crossing took no more than 15 minutes and the sea was extremely calm.

Everyone gathered by the ferry doors to disembark with their face masks on and when the doors opened a delicate stampede ensued!

We met another driver outside arrivals and drove 30 minutes to our home for the next two nights, St Patrick’s Hotel in Xlendi Bay.

Our home in Gozo

The St Patrick’s Hotel hotel reception was very quiet when we arrived at close to midnight. A friendly night porter sat behind a huge Perspex screen. Once we had completed the hotel registration form, room key in hand, we were soon settling in and relaxing.

We were due at the dive centre by 8.30am the next morning. We were up in good time and what better way to start the day standing on your balcony, looking out at the beautiful Mediterranean Sea with the warm sun rising in the background.

Breakfast is usually a buffet but due to Covid-19 it is currently served at your table. A Continental or full English breakfast was available with tea or coffee and a choice of fruit juices. Service was friendly and quick, and waiting staff were all wearing face masks.

Gozo Diving Holidays

Let’s go Diving!

After a hearty breakfast, we walked to St Andrews’s Divers Cove.  We were greeted by the owner, Mark, who was busy coordinating all of his divers / instructors and groups for the day.  Katy and I completed our dive centre registration form and a new Covid-19 medical form issued by the local government – just a few short extra questions.

What has changed during COVID?

Everyone seemed to be walking around quite freely inside and outside of the dive centre, so we asked how things had changed during this time? For the customer, he said the only change is that there is an extra form to complete.  Staff are asked to wear face masks in vehicles to dive sites. Divers still rinse their own dive equipment at the end of every day and leave kit in their designated boxes. All rental equipment is disinfected once a diver has finished using it. The centre also recommends that divers have their own boots to dive with.

Getting ready to dive

Katy had already completed her PADI theory online and passed with flying colours! The plan was for her to complete her five confined water and four open water dives on a 1 to 1 basis with her instructor,  Andrew, over the next two days.  Katy was fortunate to have been allocated her own personal instruction, and was soon whisked off to get started on her course.  Time for me to get my dive kit on, ready for my first dive!

I would be diving in Xlendi Bay today with my new diving buddy plus another couple, Emma & Rog – an orientation dive this morning, and a second dive after lunch.

Malta and Gozo Diving Holidays

What’s the diving like?

Dive sites on Gozo are accessed mostly from the shore. St Andrew’s Divers Cove has several vehicles and the drive time to most shore locations is around 30 minutes. When you arrive at the dive site, all vehicles are locked but it’s recommended you don’t take valuables with you ‘just in case’. The dive centre also has a boat, which is moored in Xlendi Bay or sometimes close to the ferry port.

Kitted up, we walked just five minutes from the dive centre to our entry point along the left side of Xlendi Bay. There are several different slopes down to a small rock platform, with metal steps to get into the sea.  BCD’s inflated, we walked carefully down the steps (quite slippery) into the sea where we put our fins on.

Our first day of diving!

Our dive started at 5m with a leisurely swim across Xlendi Bay. The sea was welcomingly warm and the visibility was amazing!  Fish life wasn’t abundant or markedly vibrant, but I was mightily impressed by the topography of the undulating seabed and the rock faces plunging into the Mediterranean. A lovely swim-through tunnel created wonderful lighting and great vis.

Dive two took us on a different route through the Bay. Finning our way to the opposite side, we dived with the stunning cliffs on our right shoulder, then crossed back for the second half of our dive. As we floated along, a handful of small fish swam by, with many stopping to feed off the algae-rich rockface. We passed beneath several overhangs, all beautifully lit where the bright Mediterranean sun penetrated through paper-thin cracks.  A couple of small, open caves were also explored.

My group was back at the dive centre by 3.30pm and changed in no time. Two lovely, relaxing dives were just what I needed and the perfect introduction to Gozo.

But where was Katy?

As it turned out, Katy didn’t finish until 6pm! Her instructor Andrew had tried to pack in as much as he could in the first day. Having done extremely well practising her underwater skills, he announced that she was a natural!

Malta and Gozo Diving Holidays

Time to relax

A quick freshen up back at our hotel, and it was time for dinner.  Xlendi Bay seafront was very lively in the evening and all the restaurants were buzzing. Such a great atmosphere. Having asked the dive centre for local recommendations for food, we chose Churchill’s restaurant, on the left side of the bay, just a short walk from our hotel.

All tables were full (a great sign).  After a short wait we were seated right beside the water’s edge with a wonderful view of Xlendi Bay. The menu was extremely varied, with mouth-watering meat and fish dishes, salads, pasta and pizzas. I love pizzas, so though it would be rude not to have one – opting for the Churchill special with numerous delicious fresh Mediterranean toppings. Katy chose the local catch of the day, sea bream, with some local veg after asking the waitress for her recommendation. Our food was delicious, and our plates were soon empty; we were absolutely stuffed – no room for dessert tonight!

Day two – a wreck… and something to celebrate!

Day Two for diving in Gozo and an 8.30am start again. Katy and Andrew had concocted a plan to finish her course by the end of the day and I was diving from shore, just 30 minutes’ drive away with my new buddies.

Driving through picturesque villages and towns, we began our descent towards our dive site.  Parking our pick-up truck alongside several other diver’s vehicles, we made our way to the kit up area.  This used to be where they harvested sea salt, so it was very flat and rocky.  Picking up our fins we walked to the entry point.  A handrail steadied you as you inched into the sea over a very smooth and slippery rock bed until you could float on your back to put on your fins. With everyone ready, we descended to start our dive.

Our second day of diving!

Clear blue skies and bright sunshine meant that visibility was great. Swimming with the coastline on our right we explored huge boulders and the rock face to find life. We spotted several brightly coloured seaworms and the eyes of a brilliantly hidden octopus on the seabed, tucked tightly into a rocky nook. The underwater landscape continued to amaze me, and it was lovely to see small fish activity along the way.

My afternoon dive was a boat dive to the P31 Patrol boat wreck off Comino. A deliberately sunk boat, with all windows and nasty bits removed, the P31 sits on a bed of sand at 18m at its deepest. Perfect dive for all levels, with large openings and interior to explore; it’s also easy to navigate in the great visibility.

I was back at the dive centre by 3.30pm again but Katy was nowhere to be seen! Eventually catching up with her at 6.30pm as she was completing her final course paperwork, as a newly-qualified PADI Open Water Diver! Katy said the past two days had been totally non-stop, mentally challenging and very tiring but in the end, well worth it!

Congratulations Katy!

Malta and Gozo Diving holidays St.Patricks hotel

We couldn’t wait to go diving together but it was sadly time to say goodbye to Gozo and continue our adventures in Malta. Saying our thanks to the  St Andrew’s Divers Cove Team we grabbed our luggage from the hotel, jumped in a car back to the ferry port for the 7.30pm ferry back to Malta.

Gozo, St Patrick’s hotel and St Andrew’s Divers Cove had made us feel very welcome.  We both agreed we would love to return someday soon – we have both fallen in love with the picture-postcard setting of Xlendi Bay !

NEW: CROATIA – John dives into our latest destination https://wpupgrade.diversetravel.co.uk/new-for-diverse-travel-croatia-diving-holidays/ Thu, 01 Oct 2020 11:38:26 +0000 https://www.diversetravel.co.uk/?p=22622

You asked… we delivered! With more and more Diverse Travel guests asking for short-haul holidays, I was delighted to be invited to go and check out the diving in Croatia ahead of our launch of this new destination. Croatia has been a long time on my travel wish-list. I’d heard so much about its incredible scenery above and under the water, as well as its relaxed and friendly atmosphere.  I was really excited to see if it would live up to my expectations.

Croatia is ideal for:

  • Sunny short breaks – just over two hours flying time
  • Divers who enjoy interesting topography and critter spotting
  • Those who want to mix diving with culture
  • Anyone travelling with non-diving friends or family

Getting to Croatia

I travelled to Croatia at the end of July, just as the travel restrictions started to ease for many countries in Europe. Everyone is wondering what it’s like to get back to air travel now and so I was happy to be able to experience this personally in order to better help our Diverse Travel guests with their travel plans.

What was the travel like?

I am pleased to say that the whole experience of flying from Luton to Split was very easy and straightforward. I felt very safe: there were hand sanitisers freely available everywhere, plenty of signs, and the airport staff were well organised. Everyone was respectful of the 2m rule.  Even in the security queue, which made the whole experience much less of a scramble than usual!

My flight was at 6am so the airport was pretty quiet.  Most of the shops and facilities were open and operating as normal. Everyone was wearing masks in the airport and I needed to keep my mask on during the flight (except when I was eating or drinking). With the flight lasting just over two hours, this was no trouble at all. I was asked to complete an immigration form on the plane (and a similar one on my return to the UK) but really, there was little different about the journey.  I arrived in Split in time for breakfast.

Arriving in Trogir

Trogir Dive Centre is situated just a speedy 15 minute transfer from the airport in lovely Okrug Gornji Bay. The whole journey had taken less time than me getting to the UK coast on a sunny weekend!

Croatia Diving Holidays

Let’s go diving!

It might have been an early start, but this was a big advantage as it meant that by 10am I was already at the Trogir Diving Centre.  All ready to enjoy the sunshine and meet the very friendly team, who explained how the diving here works.

With four boats, the dive centre has plenty of choice for your diving day.  Guests can choose either 1 tank morning or afternoon dives or go a bit further afield for a 2 tank, full day trip. The boats launch just 50m from the dive centre which is really handy.  There is an excellent range of equipment to hire including 10, 12 and 15l tanks. Each boat takes around 10-12 divers as a maximum. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, everything you’d expect from a family-run dive centre. Cold drinks are available, and they even offer breakfast, lunch and dinner if you want each day.

I particularly loved the way the full day excursions are run here. One dive in the morning, and another in the afternoon. Nice and relaxed. At lunchtime the boat calls at a pretty village so everyone can have a wander and enjoy lunch at one of the many cafes. A great way to experience just some of what this beautiful country has to offer. Just a shame a glass of wine or beer is not allowed!

What’s the diving like and what can you see?

On my first day I opted to do a single dive, which served as my checkout dive. After an extended time out of the water, I was desperate to get out on the boat and explore. With the water a pleasant 21 to 25C at shallower depths and in the high teens at depth, I was comfortable in a 5mm wetsuit and hood.

First Impressions

My first impressions were of crystal clear water and plenty of interesting critters amongst the fascinating underwater topography. The Adriatic is well known for its exceptional clarity and the most perfect hues of blue that frame the colourful corals on the walls and sloping reefs. On my first dive I was delighted to see some grouper, a couple of morays and a curious octopus, but that was nothing compared to my discoveries later in the week.

You know what it’s like, you get to the dive site and they say, yesterday we had 5 or 6 of whatever the local must-see creature is, and you think what’s the betting they are not about today! But just 10 minutes boat ride from the dive centre is the best place to find stunning Yellow Seahorses. The dive centre team are exceptionally guest-orientated and don’t want you to go away disappointed. They also know the dive sites like the back of their hands, so ask and (fingers crossed!) you shall find! Well, we did… two beautiful, tiny Yellow Seahorses absolutely made my day.

Croatia Diving Holidays

The diving in this area is quite typically Mediterranean and it reminded me a little of the Canaries. Plenty of caves, walls with overhangs and swim-throughs, and other interesting rock formations to explore. Many endemic species hide amongst them and it’s a good idea to take a dive light to illuminate the tiny cracks and crevices. Nudibranchs of all hues are a particular speciality here. But there’s also plenty of bigger species. This area really does have something for all divers!

How far are the dive sites?

The dive sites are typically situated a 10-80 minute boat ride from the centre. Diving here is for all levels, and most of the sites could cater for everyone from Open Water qualified to also offering plenty to see at 25/30m for those with Advanced or higher. All of our dives ended near/under the boat in a 5m area.

During my stay, the Adriatic was flat calm and the summer weather just the right mix of sun and cloud to be comfortable. On day three, the first dive included a cave with a lot of colourful sponges covering the entrance and roof. Afterwards, a tasty lunch at a small village was followed by a nice relaxing dive on a treasure hunt for seahorses again. But this time the highlight was a very compliant pair of cuttlefish that we stayed with for a good 10 minutes.

Accommodation Matters

Diverse Travel guests can choose from a variety of superb apartments to suit group size and needs. I stayed in a one bedroom apartment at Zaja Apartments.  They are just a 150m stroll from the dive centre in a residential area on the outskirts of the pretty resort of Okrug Gornji Bay. My apartment block had nine different apartments, but all of the accommodation, checked and verified by the dive centre management, is within 50-400m of the dive centre.

What was the accommodation like?

Each of the modern Zaja Apartments offers a well-appointed bedroom(s), a sofa bed and air-conditioning in the main living area.  Complete with a kitchen, bathroom with shower, balcony with sea view, TV/SAT, Wi-Fi, and private parking. Everything is so close at hand here that you really don’t need to hire a car. But it would be useful if you want to explore further afield along this beautiful coastline.

All of the accommodation is self-catering. Mine was certainly one of the best equipped kitchens I’ve ever seen in an apartment, but I wasn’t going to make much more than a cup of tea there.  There are so many lovely restaurants and cafes to discover in the area. It’s a short walk to the waterfront or you can take a water taxi to the old town of Trogir for even more choice. I enjoyed a cold beer most nights on the balcony, admiring the lovely view.  Each night heading into the resort for a bite to eat and to soak up the evening atmosphere.

What else is there to do in Trogir, Croatia?

The last day before coming home from a dive trip is never a diver’s favourite. That’s unless there is a beautiful historic location to explore on your doorstep. And I soon learnt there’s no shortage of possibilities for passing the time in this area!

The fascinating waterfront town of Trogir, a World Heritage Site since 1997, is just a scenic water taxi ride (or ten minutes by road) from the dive centre and your accommodation. What could be better than combining a bit of exercise and history. Climbing the castle tower and the spire of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence were both great workouts. And absolutely worth it for the stunning views from the top.

Trogir is technically an island, connected to the mainland by a bridge. It’s extremely photogenic and with 2,000 years of history, non-diving partners or friends can easily find plenty to see and do. There’s also fantastic local (and international) food on offer! On my final day, I enjoyed a leisurely, traditional lunch in one of the many reasonably-priced restaurants dotted around the town.

My trip to Croatia was sadly coming to an end. I stayed for 5 nights but with three full days and 1 half day’s diving.  You can pack a lot of underwater time into a short stay. Croatia’s closeness to the UK means it is perfect for short breaks of less than a week – or even a long weekend. But Croatia is a vast and beautiful country and with more than 700 islands there is so much to see here. Trogir is an excellent starting point for a longer Croatian adventure too and I am absolutely looking forward to returning to this lovely destination someday soon.
